Plants that grow vertically and offer restaurants, cafés and private households the opportunity to grow some of their fruit and vegetables themselves, even in a limited space. This minimises transport routes and saves CO2.
Ladybirds not pesticides
Water-repellent, magnetic and luminous: A project in Israel is producing cotton with properties that usually are only achievable with chemical aftertreatments. Growing the plants in water reduces water consumption by 90 percent, while ladybirds protect the plants from pests. The project proves that CO2-neutral cotton cultivation is possible.
Store not polluter
Soils bind three times more CO2 than the atmosphere. However, agricultural processing releases the CO2 again. Carbon farming uses plants that remove CO2 from the air and store it in the soil. The capacities are sold to companies in the form of carbon credits, which can then offset their emissions.
Olive trees not beanstalks
Perennial varieties such as apples, grapes and olives have deeper roots, and can therefore better absorb and secure water from moist soils. This makes cultivating them less resource- and chemical-intensive. Researchers are currently developing perennial versions of cereals, vegetables and the sunflower.
Plant fertiliser not waste hair
Students in Tanzania have developed a liquid fertiliser that removes nutrients from hair remnants by adding potassium hydroxide. These nutrients can be used by plants for their growth and development.
Algae not oil
Algae could be the biological fuel of the future. To do this, they are genetically modified to produce enough fats for fuel. The advantage: algae grow in salt water and absorb CO2 as they do. They are a natural CO2 sink, save both fresh water and acreage and could power the tractor of tomorrow.
