The current figures are alarming: up to 828 million people worldwide suffer from chronic hunger, and the number of people without secure access to sufficient food has increased by 350 million to 2.3 billion since 2019. Conflicts, climate extremes, economic insecurity, and inequality further exacerbate the situation.
The United Nations has set the ambitious goal of ending hunger by 2023. However, 828 million people still suffer from hunger worldwide, a significant increase compared to the time before the COVID-19 pandemic. The Russian aggression against Ukraine has particularly exacerbated the situation, triggering a humanitarian catastrophe in countries already affected by drought.
For this reason, in May 2022, BMZ and the World Bank launched the Global Alliance for Food Security (GAFS). This alliance aims to bring much-needed assistance where it is most urgently needed and initiate long-term structural changes as a crisis response mechanism.
The video also emphasises the positive effects of healthier nutrition and more conscious shopping on our health, the environment, and the livelihoods of people working in the agricultural and food sectors. Through conscious decisions from cultivation to consumption, opportunities for a shift towards sustainable, healthy, and fair agricultural and food systems can be created.
According to BMZ, three pillars are particularly important for improving the agricultural and food system: a sustainable and holistic transformation of the system, cooperation with various partners such as other ministries, industry, and civil society, as well as placing the issue on the international agenda, for example, at the G7 or the Global Alliance for Food Security.
The video is a call to action to acknowledge the urgent need for change and take concrete steps to combat global hunger.

Some African countries have therefore opted to impose such import restrictions for a number of products. For the case of chicken imports in Ghana, this study analyses whether restrictions would lead to overall positive or negative welfare effects among households.
Kenya is a large importer of vetable oils mainly from Indonesia and Malaysia - amongst them sunflower oil. Due to the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, there were supply bottlenecks and food shortages, leading to less affordable vegetable oils in Kenya.
